Houston Chronicle Article about 2010 Katy ServeFest

Help now, go to Disney later

Several Katy churches and the Katy Family YMCA are gathering volunteers in preparation for the fifth annual Katy ServeFest on Feb. 27 and March 6.

Katy ServeFest is a yearly program organized by Compassion Katy with the goal of benefiting local nonprofits. Compassion Katy was started in 2005 by people at the Fellowship of Cinco Ranch to provide the extra help needed for the survivors of Hurricane Katrina who had relocated to the Katy area.

Diane Walker, executive director of Katy ServeFest, said this year’s program will benefit the Pregnancy Help Center, 1450 E. Summitry Circle, Katy, and the YMCA Camp Cinco, 15050 Cinco Park Blvd., Katy.

This year Compassion Katy is also a partner with the Walt Disney Company in its “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” promotion. Each volunteer that registers online with the Walt Disney Co. will receive a ticket good for one-day admission to any Walt Disney Park.

“We want to inspire one million people to volunteer a day of service to a participating organization in their communities,” according to the Disney organization’s Web site at…

“So we’re celebrating these volunteers’ good works by giving each of them a one-day, one-theme park ticket to the Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World Resort, free.”

Katy churches participating this year are Grace Fellowship United Methodist Church, Grand Lakes Presbyterian, Fellowship of Cinco Ranch, Vineyard Church and The Crossings. Volunteers do not need to be a member of one of the participating churches or the Katy Family YMCA to help out.

Fellowship at Cinco Ranch, through the leadership of Walker, is organizing the event, rounding up church volunteers, monetary support and supplies. Walker also finds nonprofits that could use help with cleanup, repairs, painting and other projects.

Some of the participating churches have certain jobs they do every year, but most provide volunteers who are ready and willing to help where needed.

“We very seldom have one church that does just one section of the list,” said Walker, “although I know in the past Grace Fellowship volunteers have helped out in landscaping. Grand Lakes Presbyterian Church volunteers have helped in past years in doing pressure washer work.

“The whole point is to get the different churches to do different things together,” said Walker. “We just try to give them different areas of accountability to try to help each church have a leadership role.”

The Katy Family YMCA, 22807 Westheimer Parkway, is unique in that the organization is providing volunteers for the program, but YMCA Camp Cinco will be one of the beneficiaries of Katy ServeFest. Camp Cinco is located next to Creech Elementary School, 5905 S. Mason Road.

“Camp Cinco can use a lot of volunteers. “The YMCA has so many needs they say they can keep 250 people busy for a day, two days in a row,” said Walker.

“There is a whole list of things we are working on,” said Brian Holmes, Katy YMCA executive director. “It’s both cosmetic and repair to the existing site, everything from cleaning, painting, carpentry, building fences and also some new initiatives. For example, last year volunteers helped install a playground that had been donated. They also assisted in moving an outdoor theater which consisted of a stage and seating to a different location and painting.”

Last year ServeFest had 450 volunteers. Walker said she has 600 people signed up so far, but there is room for more.

“People can come out the day of the event at either Camp Cinco or the Pregnancy Help Center and we can get them started. If they want the Disney pass, we can sign them up for that, also.

We encourage people to stay until all the projects are completed, but we understand if you have to leave early,” said Walker.

Katy ServeFest 2009

Katy ServeFest 2009

In 2009, our busiest year yet, 3 different work events included over 450 volunteers and over 3000 volunteer hours. Partnering churches were:

Alief Baptist Church of Katy, The Crossings , Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church, Grace Fellowship UMC, Grand Lakes Presbyterian Church, The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch, Redeemer, Vineyard Church, and Westland Baptist.

Who all worked together to bless the Krause Children’s Center, YMCA’s Camp Cinco and Katy Christian Ministries.

This years projects included landscaping, painting, carpentry, and many other projects, allowing our non-profits to put more of their funding into programs rather than facility improvements. As our desire is to truly impact our community for Christ, this year offered more personal opportunities as well. Some volunteers were able to interact directly with the kids most impacted by these projects. One group went to Williams Elementary to make cards for the troops with the Arc of Katy kids, who often use the YMCA Camp Cinco as part of their weekly activities. Another group, consisting mainly of volunteers from Grand Lakes Presbyterian Church, put on an ice cream social for the kids at the Krause Children’s Center. The staff members mentioned what a joy it was to see the kids so excited about a treat that average kids often take for granted. We plan to continue to offer these opportunities around our ServeFests hoping to use our Good Deeds to promote Good Will to spread the Good News of Jesus. Another addition this year was offering prayer at each site as many from the community show up to work.

Katy ServeFest 2008 – West Houston Charter School

Partnering churches for 2008 were Grand Lakes Presbyterian, Grace Methodist and The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch. Over two weekends projects included 30 bookcases, remodeling, painting and general landscaping at the West Houston Charter School location.

We were excited to also have a second volunteer location. Volunteers painted the Breath of Life Children’s clinic and installed a new floor for one of the waiting areas.   In 2008 alone our volunteer total was over 300 volunteers giving almost 2,000 volunteer hours.  The theme was “Average, Ordinary, Everyday Superheroes” and we definitely had quit a few.

2nd Annual Katy ServeFest:  Compassion in Action, Community Volunteer
Effort to Benefit Calvin Nelms Charter School

Area churches and community leaders formally announced an effort to beautify and support Calvin Nelms Charter School located at 20625 Clay Road in Katy with an Extreme Makeover type of experience that is this year’s  Katy ServeFest, a compassion in action project.  The kick-off was held at The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch on Sunday afternoon, June 10th, as area churches and members gathered to celebrate last years inaugural Katy ServeFest and to plan and prepare for this year’s event.

“We want the community at large to know that they can make a difference in their city and have fun doing it,” says Diane Walker, Executive Director of  “Last year we helped Faith West with a similar type of volunteer event and the results were amazing.  The school officials and families were impressed with the difference our community volunteers made to the overall improvement of their school.”

The Extreme Makeover project at Calvin Nelms Charter School will include landscaping work, painting, remodeling, school preparation support for oncoming students, and more, on July 28th and August 4th from 8am to 5pm.  Volunteers are encouraged to visit: to learn how they can help and get on the schedule or call (281)395-3950.  All work is pre-planned in 4-hour increments and tailored to the volunteers talents and abilities.  Compassion Katy will also accept financial donations to support this effort specifically.

“We plan to produce an entertaining and informative video on-line documenting our community involvement,” says Mrs. Walker.

Compassion Katy Organizes Katy ServeFest to Help Faith West Academy

Katy, Texas (July 27, 2006) Compassion Katy was launched during Katrina to serve as a portal for volunteers into the community.  Since that time, it has helped over 1,500 Katrina evacuees, facilitated by hundreds of volunteers.  “We are getting the word out in the community that we are a resource that can make things happen and there are needs daily”, says Diane Walker, Executive Director. “It is amazing to see people show up and find out about the many projects we are working on.”  To date, Compassion Katy, A Ministry The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch has helped Katy Christian Ministries, Breath of Life Children’s clinic, Katy Home Savers the YMCA, The Krause Center and Pregnancy Help Center.

The first Annual Katy ServeFest was launched 7/22 where over 30 community volunteers descended on Faith West Academy to paint an entire wing of the school’s campus.  According to Steve Nordlander, the construction organizer, “The value to the school was in excess of $7,500 and meant 32 gallons of paint were used to apply a new look to the interior of the school.  We even rebuilt a wall that was in need of repair,” he said.

The headmaster, Raul Hinojosa, walked through and saw all the work that had been completed and was amazed by the community support.  To see a video montage of the event, log onto

The work is not over.  Phase II of the project starts Saturday, August 5th at 8:00 am at Faith West Academy.   Anyone is welcome to sign up and participate at

Area churches are partnering to provide campus wide assistance to help Faith West Academy get ready for school.  “We will be doing everything from carpentry, painting, and landscaping, to a food drive benefiting Katy Christian Ministries,” says Diane. “We chose Faith West Academy and they agreed to accept our support, because so many community active parents are so connected to the school,” says Diane.  The bigger picture is that Compassion Katy was chosen to be a supporter of CityFest Houston coming in October (  “We are so excited to play an active role in the community and are looking forward to serve our community with the help of local churches and volunteers that make good things happen for people in need,” says Diane.

Tools 4 Life Books Benefit Volunteers Needed

We need your help for a great cause! Tools 4 Life Books is a ministry that comes alongside teens in crisis. Our powerful Tools 4 Teens book and Tools 4 Teens Program targets teens considered at-risk. Throughout our 8-week program students take a journey straight through the Tools 4 Teens book. Key issues such as Peer Pressure, Alcohol and Drug Use, Cyberbullying, Sexual Purity, Healthy Relationships, Anger/Forgiveness and overall positive living are taught throughout this interactive program. Each student leaves the program with a personalized copy of Tools 4 Teens which serves as a reference for many years.

On Saturday, May 22nd Tools 4 Life Books will host a benefit at The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch. The event will include a silent auction, dinner and live performance by three awesome teens. We hope to fill the house with 300 guests. The proceeds will enable 65 teens at Krause Children’s Center ( to take the 8-week Tools 4 Teens Program. The teen residents at Krause are victims of sexual, emotion and/or physical abuse. They will be profoundly impacted by this program which instills hope for a future that is unlike their past.

Help is really needed with this event. The first committee meeting is on Wednesday, March 31 where many of the details will be discussed and delegated to committee members.

The committee categories include:
Donations for silent auction
